I am currently going through old copies of the Winona Times which began printing in March 1881, to extract information about births, marriages and deaths. I am also searching for on-line databases of other vital records for Montgomery County.

At the residence of bride's grandfather, F. A. Allen, Montgomery county, (rest of paragraph illegible). And thus we see a beautiful bouquet made of only two flowers. May it never fade, but live and increase to a dozen flowers, is the wish of the Advance.

On February 10, 1881, near French Camps, in Choctaw county by Eld. MCinney, Mr.J. A. Young to Miss. Laura Elkin. And thus it is that the rising generation carry out the divine injunction. We are always glad to publish a marriage because it betokens peace, prosperity and happiness. May all these blessings attend this young couple, is the wish of the Advance.

On Friday, February 25, 1881, Mary Harvey, widow of the late George Harvey, aged about 46 years.

Just as we go to press we learn that James Blackston died at Durant yesterday (Thursday). He will be buried in Winona today (Friday).

JAMES BLACKSTON

At the residence of his brother-in-law residing in Evans in Durant, ______ day the 3rd day of March, after a short and painful illness, Mr. James E. Blackston, in the 21st year of his age.

Cut off in the first warm glow of early manhood, moment without warning, so sudden and unexpectedly, that we can hardly realize that he is gone. But ah, the sad fact is forced upon us in many ways. We have seen him lying so still, and, pulseless, he that was so buoyant, and full of life. We have joined in the sad throng, and followed his remains with slow, and solemn gait to the silent city of the dead. We have with our hearts, too full for utterance, stood by the grave, and seen the coffin lowered into its final resting place, and then heard the clods fall with such a heart breaking sound upon the casket that contained all that was mortal of the friend that we have loved with such a pure, and abiding friendship. Yes, he is going, gone from our sight forever, in this life. Never again shall we clasp his hand in ours, the hand that always met us with such a warm, and hearty grasp, and the voice that always greeted us with such warm and kindly welcome, is still and silent now, and we are left to weep and mourn for its music that we shall never in this life hear again. Oh!, what so _our for memory, and tears is that when we turn away from the little mound where we have just consigned the mortal part of our best friend. The one from whom our heart held nothing. No secret that he was not welcome to read, and no pleasure, that it was not our greatest joy to have him share. How passing strange that only a few, short hours, should work such a wondrous change. Without a word of warning, the golden cord of life was broken and the playmate of our boyhood, the companion of our youth, and the warm, tried and trusty friend of our early manhood, is taking away from the walks of life, and from the presence of those whom he loved, and that loved him so well. Gone into the unseen world. He has paid the great debt of nature that each and every one of us will have to pay when the dread summons comes. He has solved the great mystery of his nature, gone far beyond the confines of Philosophy, or speculation, and learned the mystery of the spirit life, and perhaps to-day rejoices that he was taken so soon, before the multiplied cares, and troubles of this life, shall have left their imprint on high art.

Oh, how devout we wish that we could bring consolation and comfort to the hearts of the bereaved father, mother, sister and brothers of our friend that is gone. A loving and dutiful son, a kind and affectionate brother, and a warm, true friend; it is no wonder that we mourn his loss so deeply. We tender the warmest sympathy of our hearts to the sorrowing parents, sister and brothers of our loved and lost friend.

*Dr. J. W. HOLMAN*	*Winona Times*	*April 17, 1881*
At his residence in Winona, on Thursday April 21, 1881, of Miningitis, Dr. J. W. Holman, aged 52 years. Dr. Holman was one of the oldest practitioners in Montgomery or Carroll county. He graduated at a first-class Medical College, and has been continuously in the practice, in this immediate neighborhood for about 80 years, and had won the respect and confidence of his patrons and the public. He was a kind husband, loving father and devoted brother. He had been connected with the Baptist church for many years. He was an intelligent and useful citizen in every walk of life. We hae not time or space to any more this issue, but will publish in our next, a sketch of his life and services written by an intimate friend.

A Good Man Gone. While we had known Dr. J. W. Holman, by reputation for several years, it was never our pleasure to meet him until the late assemblage of the medical convention at Winona. While we were fully prepared to meet a gentlemen, one whom we should honor and respect, we hardly expected to love him on so short an acquaintance, and yet such was the fact. A few brief hours spent in his association, made almost the impression of a life true. There was something so warming in his presence, so magnetic in his influence, that we felt as if we had known him for years, and we parted with him under the impression that we would not only meet again, but that our brief acquaintance would eventuate in a firm friendship. The death of such a man effects not only Winona, but it is a loss to the state, although he neither had nor sought office. But such characters constitute the moral and intellectual wealth of a community and in proportion as they multiply, do peace, good will and honor prevail. Such men may not have the wealth to build railroads, open canals and establish lines of steamships but they command those resources that create a sound public opinion, enlarge the sphere of benevolence, increase the confidence of man in his fellow, and then regulate the laws of purest social life. Truly it may be said, that a good man has fallen, the thriving town of Winona may wear the weeds of mourning for one of her truest and best citizens. Grenada New South.

*WILLIAM E. SMITH*	*Winona Times*	*April 25, 1881*
On April 16, 1881, at the residence of his father, Wm. A. Smith, in Carroll County, Wm E. Smith, of consumption, aged 16 years, 6 months.

*DR. HENRY RAY*	*Winona Times*	*March 18, 1881*
A Fatal Accident - Terrible Explosion in Grenada. On last Monday a telegram was received in this place, to be forwarded to Capt. Wm. Ray, at Carrollton, stating that his son, Dr. Henry Ray was dying. On further inquiry we learned that Capt W. F. Towler had purchased a new soda fount to put in his drug store, and had Dr. Ray assisting him to put it in working order. The gauge was not in fix, and they charged it too heavily, when it exploded, making a report equal to a cannon, and doing great damage to the drug store, and wounding Dr. Ray and Capt Towler severely. Dr. Ray, only lived one and a half hours, and Capt. Towler had one eye torn out and the other ruined, as well as his skull broke. It is not supposed he will recover. We have known Henry Ray from his infancy, and are grieved to hear of his end fate. He remained in Grenada during the whole time of the yellow fever, and did his duty gallantly. He leaves a wife and four children.

On February 22, 1881, Mrs. Sarah Edwards, wife of W. L. Edwards, aged about 50 years. She leaves 9 children and a husband to grieve her loss.

*WILLIAM LOTT*	*Winona Times*	*April 22, 1881*
On Thursday, March 3, 1881, at his residence 10 miles north of Winona near Duck Hill very suddenly, William Lott, aged 51 years of disease of the heart. Mr. Lott was a member of Company A, 42nd Mississippi regiment during the late war, and will no doubt be well remembered by all of the members of the Regiment as the commisary teamster, for the writer, for over two years. He was faithful to every trust, and since the war he has been an active, energetic citizen, and has accumulated a sufficiently of this worlds goods to impart his family in the future.

*MRS. ALICE STANDLEY*	*Winona Times*	*April 22, 1881*
On the 4th of April at the residence of her husband, Capt James H. Standley in Atoka, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, after an illness of six days,Mrs. Alice Standley, nee Posey, aged 37 years, 9 months and 12 days. This letter in which we got the sad news says, "She was a devoted and dutiful wife, and the same christian woman as when she left Mississippi. She died as calm and brave as christians only can. There is no question of her eternal salvation. She had borne 4 children, one par twins - all girls wince she moved to the Territory, and they are all living. Captain Standley and his excellent wife were formerly citizens of this place, and have many warm friends so sympathized in his afflictions.

On Friday, April 29th, 1881 at Lexington, Mrs. Nettie Allen, wife of John D. Allen, formerly of Carroll county.
